The AI cognitive drain

There seem to be quite a lot of people getting woodies over AI. AI is going to change the world. Take your job. Transform industries. Drive your car. Anticipate your needs. Impersonate you.

Maybe.
Maybe not.

We love speculating on the future of business. But if we’re honest, we are all just guessing. Humans have proven to be spectacularly rubbish at predicting change, so our track record does not suggest these AI sages are going to be anywhere near the money.

The reason we are so bad, is that on our little rotating ball we have a massive number of wildly diverse activities going on and beliefs held at any one time - and we are introducing new ones all the time.

These are messily connected all over the place. Some connections we know about others we don’t. With all these moving parts, moving pathways, and then throw into the mix us irrational humans pulling levers to wreck, create, recombine, and reimagine, it is little wonder we have no certainty of what is around the corner!

Imagine if all the cognitive effort and activity devoted to AI speculation and trying to find use cases for it were instead diverted to getting to know your customers better.

That would be the best way I can think of to predict the (at least near-term) future of your business with any element of certainty.

But we have a very shiny object that is down a massive digital rabbit hole. Our present bias takes over and down that hole we slide….

If you are after a little more certainty, and want help to find out what your customers really think about your brand, give me a shout (coz you can’t read the label from inside the jar!)
